    What IPC Section 471 covered

Punishes fraudulently or dishonestly using as genuine any document or electronic record which the person knows or has reason to believe to be forged.

What changed in BNS Section 340(2)

IPC Sections 470 and 471 become sub-sections (1) and (2) of BNS Section 340. The punishment is unchanged.

Punishment: IPC 471 compared with BNS 340(2)

The punishment is the same under both codes. Punished in the same manner as if the person had forged the document or electronic record.

Which law applies: IPC or BNS?

The BNS applies to offences committed on or after 1 July 2024. An offence committed before that date continues to be investigated, tried and punished under the IPC, because the repeal and savings clause in Section 358 of the BNS preserves liabilities and proceedings under the repealed Code.
