    What IPC Section 506 covered

Provides the punishment for criminal intimidation, with a higher maximum where the threat is to cause death or grievous hurt, to destroy property by fire, to cause an offence punishable with death, life or seven years, or to impute unchastity to a woman.

What changed in BNS Section 351(2)

The punishment is unchanged. The two parts of IPC Section 506 are now separate sub-sections, 351(2) and 351(3), so a charge should cite the correct one.

Punishment: IPC 506 compared with BNS 351(2)

    Under IPC Section 506
Imprisonment up to 2 years, or fine, or both. For the graver threats: up to 7 years, or fine, or both.
    Under BNS Section 351(2)
Section 351(2): imprisonment up to 2 years, or fine, or both. Section 351(3), for the graver threats: up to 7 years, or fine, or both.

Which law applies: IPC or BNS?

The BNS applies to offences committed on or after 1 July 2024. An offence committed before that date continues to be investigated, tried and punished under the IPC, because the repeal and savings clause in Section 358 of the BNS preserves liabilities and proceedings under the repealed Code.

Read the full text of both provisions before you cite them. The official bare acts are published on India Code.
