How to check case status by CNR number on eCourts

Every case registered in a district court or High Court on the eCourts system has a unique CNR number. With it you can see the current status, the next hearing date, the hearing history and uploaded orders in under a minute.

CNR stands for Case Number Record. It is a 16-character alphanumeric number generated when a case is registered in the Case Information System used by courts across India. Unlike a case number, which repeats across courts and years, a CNR number identifies exactly one case in the country.

A CNR number is built from four parts: a four-character code for the state and district, a two-digit code for the court establishment, a six-digit serial number, and the four-digit year of registration. For example, a number beginning DLCT01 belongs to an establishment in Delhi.

Steps to check case status with a CNR number

    1. Open the eCourts services website

For district and taluka courts, go to services.ecourts.gov.in. For High Courts, use hcservices.ecourts.gov.in. Both are run by the eCommittee of the Supreme Court of India and are free to use.

    2. Choose the CNR Number option

On the district courts site the CNR Number search is the first option in the menu. You do not need to select a state or district, because the CNR number itself identifies the court.

    3. Enter the 16-character CNR

Type the number without spaces or hyphens. Printed orders sometimes show it in groups separated by hyphens; leave those out.

    4. Enter the captcha and search

Type the characters shown in the captcha image and select Search. If the captcha is rejected, refresh it and try again.

    5. Read the case details

The result shows the case type, filing and registration numbers and dates, the court and judge, the parties and advocates, the Acts and sections, the current stage, and the next hearing date. Below that is the history of hearings and any orders or judgments uploaded by the court, which you can open as PDFs.

Check by SMS or the mobile app

    • SMS: send ECOURTS, a space, and your CNR number to 9766899899. The current status of the case is returned by SMS.
    • Mobile app: the eCourts Services app for Android and iOS has a CNR search and lets you save cases to a list, so that you can check several matters without retyping the numbers.
    • QR code: orders and case status printouts from eCourts carry a QR code that opens the case in the app.

If you do not know the CNR number

Use the Case Status menu on the same website. Select the state, district and court complex, then search by case number and year, by party name, by filing number, by advocate name, or by FIR number and police station for criminal cases. Open the case from the results and the CNR number is shown at the top of the case details. Note it down for next time.

The CNR number also appears on the e-filing acknowledgment for cases filed online and on copies of orders downloaded from eCourts.

What the status tells you, and what it does not

eCourts shows what the court staff have entered: the business recorded on each date and the next date fixed. It is usually updated the same day or within a few days of a hearing, but it can lag, and entries are sometimes corrected later. Treat the certified copy of the order as the authoritative record, and confirm an important date from the cause list published for that day.

Some tribunals, consumer commissions and revenue courts are not on eCourts and have their own websites for case status.

Check case status by CNR number: common questions

Is the CNR number the same as the case number?

No. The case number, such as CS 123/2025, is given by a particular court and the same number can exist in another court. The CNR number is a 16-character number that is unique to one case across all courts on the eCourts system.

Is there a fee to check case status on eCourts?

No. Case status, hearing history and uploaded orders on the eCourts website and app are free to view. Standard charges may apply to an SMS.

Why does my CNR number show no record?

Check that you have entered all 16 characters with no spaces or hyphens, and that you are on the right site: district court cases are on services.ecourts.gov.in and High Court cases on hcservices.ecourts.gov.in. A very recently filed case may not appear until it is registered.

Can I get hearing dates for all my cases in one place?

The eCourts app lets you save cases to a personal list. Practice management software such as Settl keeps the hearing dates you record against each matter in a firm-wide court diary; dates stay accurate only when you or your team update the record after each hearing.

Keep every next date in one diary

Record the CNR number and hearing dates on the matter in Settl and see them across the firm's court diary, with notes from each hearing kept on the case.
