What IPC Section 307 covered
Punishes doing any act with such intention or knowledge, and under such circumstances, that if death were caused the person would be guilty of murder.
What changed in BNS Section 109
The basic punishment is the same. For a life convict who causes hurt, BNS Section 109(2) adds imprisonment for the remainder of natural life as an alternative to death.

Which law applies: IPC or BNS?
The BNS applies to offences committed on or after 1 July 2024. An offence committed before that date continues to be investigated, tried and punished under the IPC, because the repeal and savings clause in Section 358 of the BNS preserves liabilities and proceedings under the repealed Code.
