What IPC Section 420 covered
Punishes cheating that dishonestly induces the person deceived to deliver any property, or to make, alter or destroy a valuable security or anything signed or sealed that can be converted into one.
What changed in BNS Section 318(4)
The punishment is unchanged. The offence is now sub-section (4) of BNS Section 318, which brings the definition of cheating and its graded punishments into one section.

Which law applies: IPC or BNS?
The BNS applies to offences committed on or after 1 July 2024. An offence committed before that date continues to be investigated, tried and punished under the IPC, because the repeal and savings clause in Section 358 of the BNS preserves liabilities and proceedings under the repealed Code.
